Gold has long represented eternity and all that is hallowed. A natural element from the earth’s core, it is a sacred gift bestowed upon us by heaven and earth. In ancient alchemy, gold is believed to be the greatest of all metals. It harbors life, appearing to change shape when viewed at different angles; it is the remedy to overcoming all obstacles. In his work, Eric Bonte removes the layer of mysticism surrounding the element. He believes that both gold and glass, like light, have the power to rouse remarkable reactions from the human soul. Bonte’s gold is a metaphor for discovery and progress.

Gold is a common thread throughout Bonte’s body of work - both commissioned and personal. Gold, glinting and omnipresent.

Tales of the Golden Age in ancient Greece recall it as a time when humans and gods lived in harmony. It is the start of the human race and an enlightened era. The philosopher Plato explained the Golden Age not as a time when everything was fashioned from gold, but as a time when humans were good and noble. He described humans as spirits of the earth, full of wisdom and intelligence.
Eric Bonte uses gold freely to varying effect. As it winds down a glass form, the gold detail appears to either establish itself or disappear. It could operate as a medium for light or as its very source. Gold has a presence that infiltrates the material and encourages reflection.

Natural elements extend naturally in Eric Bonte’s work, emerging through the power of imagination. Inspired by the French Enlightenment, his sculptures of philosophical depth emphasize the humanities and display a longing and passion for nature and attention to ideology.
Together, beauty and art breed an open mind, dissolving contradiction and banishing misunderstanding. This multifaceted way of thinking puts into practice a free and fair world view.
